let us start as we mean to go on

2009 begins with beards. A print that you can order from a website, found via Russell. I might buy one.

I have got a pile of prints and posters, mostly rolled up in cardboard tubes in the spare room. They are waiting to be hung on the walls of the 'studio'. The 'studio' is the garage at the back of the house. It currently contains bikes, a lawnmower, two big tables, an old fridge freezer that acts as an overflow from the one in the kitchen, some firewood, buckets, garden shears, paint, a mask like the ones that Altern8 used to wear - all of the usual garage stuff.

In 2009 the garage will become the 'studio'. It will be a place to work and think, and might even have a projector in it so that it can be a mini cinema. The project will start soon, but then I was saying that for most of 2008.

However, 2009 feels like the right time to do it, not least because I can then stop using inverted commas when I say the 'studio' and just call it the studio. That would be an improvement.

Paul wanted to hear more about Kimbo Slice, who recently popped up on this list of best facial hair. Paul likes all of that fighting stuff you see.

So here's what I found out about Kimbo:

Kimbo Slice's real name is Kevin Ferguson and is 33 years old. Kimbo Slice is approximately 6'2 tall, and weighs 250 lbs although his weight varies between fights. Kimbo is always shown with a full beard and a clean-shaven head.

Kimbo Slice was a star defensive football player for Miami Palmetto High School in the Pinecrest area of Miami, Florida. In college, he went on to the University of Miami on academic scholarship, but did not play football. He was there for only a year and a half.

Kimbo Slice worked as a bodyguard for RK Netmedia, a Miami-based pornography production/promotion company responsible for number of popular adult subscription websites.

Kimbo Slice has a son called Kevlar and a daughter called Kevina.

Kimbo Slice was a Miami, Florida-based underground street fighter. The underground fight videos swept across the web making him an overnight sensation. The brutal knockouts, tough appearance of Kimbo, and catchy phrases increased his popularity.  Kimbo appeared in eight street fight videos, winning seven of them. His lone lost was to Boston police officer, Sean Gannon. The fight was marred with controversy because Kimbo's crew says Gannon broke the fight rule (see kimbo fight rules below). Many Kimbo critics state that Kimbo never fought anyone decent beside Gannon.

As mentioned above, Kimbo has his own fight rules:

Kimbo Slice Street Fight Rules:

1.This is not a mixed martial art or a street fight       

2.Only punching allowed (no elbows, knees, kicks, etc.)

3.Stand up fighting only       

4.No holding or grappling with opponent is allowed

5.If someone is knocked down he has thirty seconds to get up and continue fighting       

6.Ways to win are KO, thirty second count out, and if the other guy quits

beards through the ages

The beard is the longest it's ever been. But what to do now? Push on through until Christmas and dye it white? Shave it all off (and then grow a 'tache) for a worthy cause? Or how about a plait? I think technoviking has a plait.

Was looking at some stuff on a site this morning (Marcus Walters - a fine illustrator) when I came across this.

I was taken aback. It looks a bit like me. It's a better version of me than the one I drew last year (below). Maybe I'll get a copy.

I pinched this from Charlie/Tantramar. It depicts some hairy men, myself included (wearing specs). Charlie's wearing the sky blue shirt.

The evening itself was interesting, but suffered from some overly intellectual interludes from one of the speakers, who spoke at length about ladies with beards. And not the kind you found in Victorian circuses. Real life ladies with big beards who have been suppressed by The Man, or something like that. It was Millie Tant in excelsis.

Having said that, Billy Childish was very funny, and so was the man from The Chap.
