First post back after a nice long holiday, and I thought we'd start with Bunker Spreckels. That's Bunker in the white trousers, looking fine. Bunker was a surfer. He inherited a lot of money when he was quite young, which seemed to help him lead a fairly interesting life – he was what might euphemistically be known as a 'free spirit'. Sadly, Bunker died aged 27, no doubt after having a lot of fun.
I learned all about Bunker in a book that was waiting for me when I got back from my holiday. I had a pile of mail about a foot deep, including 'The Book Of Surfing', which was sent to me as a freebie. Very kind. Anyway, it's the best freebie I've had for a while. I like surfing (even though I am a very poor surfer) and the book is a good one, outlining the basics of the sport, the people who have excelled on their boards, and all of the cultural paraphernalia that comes with it.
A great book, with maximum Bunker appeal. And if you need more Bunker in your life, check this Taschen book, read this interview or watch this documentary trailer.
